Keeping Your Data Safe in 2019

Data Breaches Compromised 4.5 Billion Records in First Half of 2018

During the first half of 2018, the equivalent of 291 records were either exposed or stolen every single second according to Gemalto’s Breach Level Index. The year not only saw nearly two billion Facebook records breached, but also a total of 945 data breaches leading to a total of 4.5 billion compromised data records all within the first six months of the year. With a new year on our doorstep, it is of utmost importance to know what threats are lurking in the shadows and how to prevent our personal data from being compromised. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind next time you go online on either your PC or mobile device.

What to expect in 2019

One of the most worrying predictions for 2019 involves the online gaming community.  An increasing number of cybercriminals are expected to pose as gamers, aiming to gain access to the personal data of trusting gamers. These criminals are already posing as gamers, infiltrating even the most close-knit of communities and illegally obtaining everything from shipping addressed to credit card information. It is, unfortunately, only a matter of time until one of the world’s top cloud vendors will suffer a huge breach. There is no way to predict whether this will, indeed, happen in 2019 but the risk increases daily as hackers become more adept at their dubious craft.

Keep your personal data safe

With the likes of Timehop, MyFitnessPal, and Aadhaar all suffering mammoth breaches during 2018, it is pivotal to do whatever is necessary to keep your personal data safe. One of the easiest ways to prevent such data breaches is to secure your device by keeping your software up to date. If you keep your operating system, web browser, and other software updated you will make it a lot harder for hackers to exploit your computer or mobile device. If you make use of memory cards to back up your data on your smartphone or tablet, the crew at Bulk Memory Cards urges everyone to ensure that they do everything in their power to prolong the lifespan of the cars to keep your data secure for as long as possible.

Be careful who you connect to and download from

Don’t ever connect to an untrusted, unencrypted Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks as they can easily perform a middleman attack against you by intercepting private data that you transfer online. The same rule applies when downloading games and other software. Only ever initiate downloads from reputable sites and make sure you have up-to-date anti-virus software protecting your device. Be very vigilant when downloading as even direct download pages can trick users into things they don’t want to, leading to data breaches and other unpleasant occurrences.

There is no way to deny that the internet is enriching our lives in countless ways. Unfortunately, it has become necessary to protect ourselves against data breaches that can not only obtain our personal information but leave us in a great heap of financial difficulty as well.
