The average ransomware payment has risen to $1,077, up from $294 a year earlie

The hackers spreading ransomware are getting greedier. In 2016, the typical ransom demand to totally free computer systems hit with the infection increased to $1,077, up from $294 the year before, according to security company Symantec.

In addition, the security company has been finding more ransomware infection attempts. In 2016, the figure jumped by 36 percent from the year prior.

In 2016, consumers made up 69 percent of all ransomware infections, with the remainder targeting business, according to Symantec.

To avoid the infections, users must keep their computer system's software up to date. That includes any publicly facing servers. The security company also recommends users to erase any suspicious-looking e-mails, especially those which contain attachments or any links.

Symantec's report found that 34 percent of victims do pay the ransom. Nevertheless, just 47 percent reported getting their files back.
